Why households here choose whole-home
PBCWUD treats Biscayne Aquifer water with softening, filtration and membrane processes and then adds chloramine to protect it on the way through more than 2,500 miles of pipe. That residual is what reaches your shower, washer and every faucet. Removing it after the meter changes how the water smells and tastes throughout the house. It is a comfort and taste choice; the county's water is treated and tested to meet standards. Most people who choose it describe the same moment: the chemical smell in a hot shower, or a glass of water that tastes like a pool.
What the system has to handle
- Chloramine most of the year: more stable than chlorine, so it needs suitable media and contact time. See choosing a filter for chloramine.
- Chlorine-only weeks: twice a year during PBCWUD's semiannual maintenance. A system designed for chloramine also covers free chlorine.
- Flow: enough capacity for showers, laundry and the kitchen at the same time.
Fitting one into a Greenacres home
The system goes on the main line after the meter. In many Greenacres single-family homes, that means a spot outside near where the line enters, or in the garage. Remember the boundary: PBCWUD owns the meter box and the street side; everything on the house side, including where equipment is installed, is the homeowner's. Jorge checks line size, space, and drain or outlet needs before recommending a model.
HOAs, villas and townhomes
If your Greenacres neighborhood has a homeowners' association, check its rules about outdoor equipment before installation. In villas and townhomes where the main line is shared or hard to reach, an under-sink RO is often the practical alternative.
Pairing with drinking water
A whole-home system improves water everywhere but does not lower dissolved solids the way reverse osmosis does. Many families add an alkaline RO in the kitchen. Compare in whole-house filtration vs. RO.
If you have a well too
Some Greenacres homes have city water inside and an irrigation well outside. A whole-home system on the city line does nothing for sprinkler water. If the well also feeds the house, the treatment plan starts with the well's test instead. See well water in Greenacres.
