What gets measured
| Reading | Why it matters on City water |
|---|---|
| Total chlorine / chloramines | The City's report lists chloramines averaging 2.646 ppm |
| Hardness | Water is lime- and membrane-softened; the reading shows what remains |
| Total dissolved solids | The report lists 79 ppm; your tap confirms |
| pH | Taste and media performance |
| Iron | For discoloration or stains, especially from wells |
Readings at your tap reflect the water after it has traveled through the City's 81 miles of mains and your building's plumbing, which is why they can differ slightly from plant figures.
Reading the City's report
The City mails a Water Quality Report to billed customers each year and posts it online. The 2025 edition covers testing from January through December 2025 and shows only substances that were detected, with a complete list available on request. Each table gives the sampling date, the level detected and the limit. Note that the lead and copper results come from the most recent round of tap sampling, in September 2023.
Lead and older plumbing
The City says it cannot control the materials in home plumbing, and recommends using only cold water for drinking and cooking, flushing pipes before use, and, if you are concerned, contacting the water treatment plant at (954) 457-1632 about testing. The City's service line inventory is an ongoing project with a published map. Jorge's screening does not replace lead testing by a certified lab.
When to use a certified lab
- Private or irrigation well used for anything beyond the lawn; the Florida Department of Health recommends bacteria and nitrate at least yearly for drinking wells
- Lead or another specific contaminant
- PFAS; ask the lab which method it uses
See home screening vs. lab analysis.
For PFAS, the City's own UCMR5 results are in its Water Quality Report covering 2024; see PFAS in Hallandale Beach.
How the visit goes
- You tell Jorge what you notice.
- He tests at the kitchen tap and, if useful, a shower or the hot side.
- He explains each reading.
- If a system fits, you get an itemized quote; if not, he says so.
More: what happens during a home water assessment.
In condos, Jorge typically tests the kitchen and one bathroom; in houses, he may also check the hot side and any irrigation spigot.
