Why choose RO on already-treated water
The City's water is lime-softened, partly nanofiltered and disinfected with chloramines, and it meets drinking water standards. People still add RO for preference:
- No chloramine taste in coffee, tea and plain water
- Very low dissolved minerals for cooking and ice
- No more hauling bottled water up to a condo
- A tap whose certifications they can verify
Because the City's water is already low in dissolved solids (79 ppm in the 2025 report), RO here tends to be gentle on the membrane, and the conversation is mostly about chloramine taste and convenience.
How it works, stage by stage
- Sediment filter: catches particles, useful after City main flushing stirs sediment.
- Carbon pre-filter: reduces chlorine and chloramines, which also protects the membrane.
- RO membrane: reduces dissolved solids.
- Alkaline and polishing stage: adds minerals back and finishes the taste.
The sediment stage is worth a word in Hallandale Beach: the City's report says main flushing removes sediments like iron and manganese, and a sediment pre-filter catches what reaches your kitchen during those periods.
Condo checklist
- Association rules on plumbing work and contractors
- Cabinet space around the disposal
- An existing faucet hole, or approval to drill stone
- Drain connection
- Optional line to the refrigerator or ice maker
Tankless models save space in tight cabinets; see tankless vs. tank RO.
Certified claims only
RO systems are certified under NSF/ANSI 58, and each listing covers only the contaminants it names for that exact model. The City's report notes that a filter certified by an ANSI-accredited certifier to reduce lead is effective for reducing lead exposure from home plumbing; if lead is your concern, check the model's listing for lead. The same goes for PFAS; see PFAS filters in Hallandale Beach.
Upkeep
Pre-filters, membrane and final stage each have a schedule. Get it in writing with the quote. Running costs are explained in RO maintenance and operating costs and RO cost in Hallandale Beach.
Seasonal residents should ask how to shut off and flush the system around long absences, and schedule filter changes for when they return.
