The options
| Option | Strengths | Trade-offs |
|---|---|---|
| Pitcher | No install; good for renters and seasonal units | Small batches; frequent cartridges; confirm chloramine claim |
| Fridge filter | Convenient cold water and ice | Limited capacity; easy to forget |
| Under-sink alkaline RO | Dedicated faucet; lowest dissolved solids; minerals added back | Cabinet space; scheduled filters; some water to drain |
| Whole-home city system | Chloramines reduced at every tap | Usually for houses, not high-rise units |
The right column to weigh depends on your home. In a high-rise, the last row rarely applies; in a house, all four are on the table.
What the City's water tells you
The City blends lime-softened and nanofiltered water, reports total dissolved solids at 79 ppm, disinfects with chloramines averaging 2.646 ppm and stopped adding fluoride in July 2025. So the main thing most people want changed is the chloramine taste, which any certified option can address; RO goes further on dissolved solids.
None of these options is about making the water drinkable; the City's water meets standards. They are about taste, convenience and specific preferences.
Condo, house, seasonal
- Year-round condo: under-sink alkaline RO, with association approval
- Seasonal condo: a pitcher, or RO with a shut-off and flushing routine for when you are away
- House: RO at the kitchen, plus a whole-home system if showers bother you
Renters can start with a pitcher and talk to the landlord about RO; many approve a system that uses an existing faucet hole.
Questions to ask
- Which contaminants is the exact model certified to reduce, and under which NSF/ANSI standard?
- How often are filters replaced at our usage?
- Dedicated faucet or shared?
- What happens if we are away for months?
See whole-house vs. under-sink filters.
Ask, too, whether the system needs electricity and how the faucet looks; a tap you use daily should be pleasant to use.
Bottled water versus a filtered tap
Hauling cases to an upper-floor condo gets old. A filtered tap covers drinking, cooking, coffee and ice. Run your own comparison with bottled water vs. reverse osmosis.
A filtered tap also means fewer bottles to recycle and less storage space used in a small kitchen.
