Why the spots are still there
- Evaporation: every drop leaves dissolved solids behind.
- Added lime: the town adds liquid lime for pH, hardness and alkalinity, which leaves a little mineral content on purpose.
- Water heater sediment that loosens and lands at fixtures.
- Salt spray on balcony glass and outdoor fixtures, which is not your tap water at all.
A simple check: if spots wipe off easily with a damp cloth, they are mostly residue. Hard, crusty buildup that needs acid to remove points more toward minerals, and that is worth a hardness test.
What the town reports
The Town of Highland Beach says its reverse osmosis plant reduced hardness by about 90 percent compared with its pre-2004 water, and its 2025 report lists sodium at 54.0 ppm. Low hardness means heavy scale buildup is less likely than in cities with untreated hard groundwater.
That is very different from older parts of South Florida where untreated groundwater runs hard. If you moved from one of them, expect much less scale here.
Softener, conditioner or neither
A softener removes hardness ions; a salt-free conditioner changes how minerals behave. If hardness at your tap is already low, neither may help much. Compare in salt-free conditioner vs. ion-exchange softener.
Practical fixes
- Squeegee glass doors after showers.
- Clean aerators and shower heads periodically.
- Flush the water heater on the manufacturer's schedule.
- Rinse outdoor glass with fresh water after windy days.
For stubborn marks on glass, a diluted vinegar solution or a cleaner made for shower doors works; test it on a small area first and avoid natural stone.
Hot water and fixtures
Water heaters collect sediment over time, and that sediment can travel to aerators and shower heads. If spots and grit appear mostly on hot-water fixtures, a heater flush may help more than any filter. Follow the heater maker's schedule.
Kitchen glassware
If spots on glasses from the dishwasher bother you, check rinse aid and dishwasher settings first. For drinking glasses rinsed by hand, RO water leaves fewer marks. See under-sink RO.
