Why the town water is already soft
Reverse osmosis pushes water through membranes that hold back most dissolved minerals. When the town's plant came online in October 2004, it reported hardness down by about 90 percent. Because very low-mineral water can be corrosive to pipes, the plant adds acid and liquid lime to adjust pH and add hardness and alkalinity, and uses phosphate as a corrosion inhibitor. The result is water with some minerals added back on purpose, not hard water.
When a softener can still make sense
- Commercial kitchens, laundries and clubs where boilers, dishwashers or ice machines need very low hardness.
- A building with its own water source or a unit fed by something other than town water.
- A confirmed problem: heavy scale that a test traces to hardness rather than to evaporation or a failing water heater.
Living Water installs ion-exchange softening plants for homes and businesses when testing supports it.
What people mistake for hard water here
White marks on glass shower doors, faucet spots and crusty aerators are not always hardness. Any water leaves residue when it evaporates, the lime the town adds back contributes some, and water heaters can shed sediment. See water spots and scale in Highland Beach before deciding.
Condo considerations
In a tower, a softener would have to serve the whole building to be practical, which is an association decision. For a single unit, the usual upgrades are kitchen RO and a filter for chlorine.
What a hardness test at your tap shows
During the free visit, Jorge measures hardness in grains per gallon or parts per million at your kitchen tap, then compares it with what a softener would be expected to deliver. In a home fed by the town plant, the gap is usually small, which is the honest reason most Highland Beach households skip this purchase. If your reading is unusually high, the next question is why: a different water source, a building system or a sampling issue. That is worth knowing before anyone sizes equipment.
Test before you buy
Jorge measures hardness at your tap during the free in-home test. If the number does not justify a softener, he will say so. Call, text or WhatsApp (305) 793-5974. Compare options in softener vs. filter in Highland Beach and salt-free conditioner vs. ion-exchange softener.
