What you are filtering out
The Town of Highland Beach treats deep Floridan Aquifer water with reverse osmosis, degasification and air scrubbing, then adds lime and chlorine. Its 2025 Water Quality Report lists chlorine at an average of 1.15 ppm, with individual readings from 0.5 to 3.2 ppm. The town itself notes that because the water is so pure, a slight chlorine residual may be more noticeable than it used to be.
So the job of a whole-home system here is narrow and clear: reduce chlorine taste and odor throughout the house, and keep sediment from older plumbing out of fixtures.
Free chlorine is the easier case
Free chlorine responds well to activated carbon. That is different from much of Palm Beach County, where chloramine is the norm and filters need more contact time or catalytic carbon. In Highland Beach, a well-sized carbon-based system does the main job. The caveat: the town switches to chloramine for short maintenance periods, as it announced for October 21 to 30, 2026. A system that also handles chloramine covers those weeks too. Living Water describes its Puronics Clarius iGen and Goodspring city water systems as removing chlorine and chloramine.
Who can install one
- Single-family home: the system goes at the main line after the meter, usually in a garage or utility area.
- Townhome: possible when your unit has its own shutoff and a place for the tank, subject to association rules.
- Condo tower: usually not, because units share risers. An under-sink RO system in the kitchen is the common answer, and shower filters can help with chlorine smell.
Salt air and equipment placement
On a barrier island, outdoor equipment lives in salt air. Ask any installer where the tank and valve will sit, whether they will be shaded and covered, and how the bypass is protected. Jorge looks at placement during the visit, not after.
Whole-home plus drinking water
A whole-home filter is about chlorine at every tap. It is not designed to reduce dissolved solids. Many households pair it with kitchen RO for drinking and cooking water. Compare in best drinking water system for a Highland Beach home and whole-house filtration vs. reverse osmosis.
