Why Hollywood uses chloramine
The city treats Biscayne and Floridan Aquifer water at its Water Treatment Plant, then adds chloramines, which the 2025 report says are used to maintain water quality throughout the distribution network. Chloramine stays active longer than free chlorine, which is useful across a city of more than 140,000 residents. The 2025 range was 0.03 to 3.2 parts per million, so homes at different points in the system can see different levels.
How chloramine varies across Hollywood
The 2025 report's range of 0.03 to 3.2 parts per million shows that not every home sees the same level. Homes closer to the plant or on busier mains may get a stronger residual than homes at the far ends of the system or in buildings where water sits in pipes. That is why Jorge measures at your tap instead of assuming the citywide average, and why a whole-home system should be sized for the level you actually have.
Why plain carbon may struggle
Chloramine is chlorine bonded to ammonia. Standard carbon removes free chlorine quickly, but chloramine needs more contact time, and often a catalytic carbon designed for it. At whole-house flow rates, an undersized tank or a small cartridge can let chloramine pass. Pitcher filters and many fridge filters are sized for chlorine taste, not chloramine.
Certifications to look for
- NSF/ANSI 42 covers aesthetic claims and includes chloramine reduction as a specific claim; check that the model lists chloramine, not only chlorine.
- NSF/ANSI 53 or 58 cover specific contaminant reductions for carbon and RO systems.
- Always check the exact model's listing, and match the rated flow to your home.
Whole-home or one tap?
If the smell bothers you in the shower, treat the whole house. If it is mostly drinking water, an under-sink system may be enough. Living Water describes its Puronics Clarius iGen and Goodspring whole-home systems as removing chlorine and chloramine, and its alkaline RO units include carbon stages ahead of the membrane. See whole-home filtration and under-sink RO.
Maintenance matters
Chloramine filters do not last forever. Ask how media capacity is calculated, when it is replaced, and how you will know it is time. A free test after install shows whether the system is still doing its job. Our chloramine filter guide covers this in more depth.
Signs your filter is spent
- The chemical smell returns in the shower.
- Coffee or tea starts tasting off again.
- A test strip or meter shows chlorine residual after the filter.
Any of these means the media has reached capacity or the system is undersized for your flow.
