Why Hollywood homeowners look at whole-home systems
The City of Hollywood treats its water thoroughly: lime softening and membrane filtration for Biscayne Aquifer water, and reverse osmosis for brackish Floridan Aquifer water. After that, chloramines are added to keep the water protected all the way through the city's pipes. That residual is required, and it is also what people notice:
- A chemical or pool-like smell in a hot shower.
- A taste in coffee, tea or ice.
- A wish to have the same water at every tap, not only at the kitchen sink.
An under-sink filter fixes one faucet. A whole-home system handles the bathrooms, laundry and kitchen together.
Chloramine needs the right media
Chloramine is chlorine bonded with ammonia. It lasts longer in pipes than free chlorine, which is why utilities use it, and it is also slower to remove. A basic carbon cartridge sized for chlorine may not have enough contact time for chloramine at whole-house flow rates. When you compare systems, ask:
- What media is inside, and is it designed for chloramine, not only chlorine?
- What flow rate is it sized for, given your bathrooms and household?
- How is the media refreshed or replaced, and how often?
Our chloramine filter guide goes deeper.
Fitting a system to a Hollywood home
Housing here ranges from beach condos to 1950s ranch homes in Hollywood Hills and larger houses on the water in Hollywood Lakes and Emerald Hills. What changes from house to house:
- Where the main line enters. Some older homes need more plumbing work to reach a good install spot.
- Space and protection. Many systems sit outside near the meter or in a garage; outdoor installs need a sensible location away from irrigation spray and direct sun.
- Condo rules. In most towers you cannot treat the building's main line, so a kitchen RO system is usually the answer.
Whole-home plus drinking water
Many families pair a whole-home system with an alkaline reverse osmosis unit at the kitchen sink. The whole-home system handles chloramine everywhere; the RO polishes the water you drink and cook with. Whether you need both depends on your test and your priorities, and Jorge will tell you if one is enough. See choosing a drinking water system and whole-house vs. reverse osmosis.
What it does not do
Hollywood's water already meets drinking water standards. A whole-home filter is about taste, odor and comfort, not a fix for a water problem the city has not reported. If you are concerned about a specific contaminant, the system must be certified for that contaminant under the relevant NSF/ANSI standard; check the exact model's listing. Cost depends on your home, so Jorge gives you an itemized quote after the free test. See what drives cost in Hollywood.
