Spots vs. scale
- Spots are thin mineral rings left when droplets dry on glass, tile or dishes. Even softened water leaves some.
- Scale is a hard crust that builds over time inside shower heads, aerators, kettles, water heaters and dishwashers. That is the stronger sign of hardness.
Salt air near Hollywood Beach and sprinkler overspray from irrigation wells can also leave residue on outdoor glass and doors, which is not from your tap.
A quick check: if a crust forms inside a kettle within weeks, hardness is likely part of the story. If glass only shows faint rings that wipe off easily, evaporation is doing most of the work.
What the city does
The City of Hollywood's 2025 Water Quality Report describes lime softening and membrane filtration for water from the Biscayne Aquifer and reverse osmosis for water from the brackish Floridan Aquifer. Both lower hardness. The report does not give one hardness figure for every tap, so measuring yours is the only way to know.
Outdoor spots are often not your tap
In Hollywood, spots on car windows, sliding doors and outdoor glass often come from sprinklers fed by an irrigation well or from salt spray near the beach, not from the city water inside the house. Irrigation well water skips city treatment and can be harder and carry iron. If the spots are outside, check where your sprinklers spray and what supplies them before buying an indoor softener. See rust stains and well water.
When a softener makes sense
- Your tap test shows hardness high enough to cause scale.
- You are on a private well.
- You run a business where water heats or sits in equipment all day.
An ion-exchange softener removes calcium and magnesium; it is the method Living Water installs. See water softeners in Hollywood.
Softeners are sized from your measured hardness and household use; ask about demand-based regeneration to keep salt and water use down. See softener cost drivers.
Softener vs. conditioner
Salt-free conditioners change how minerals behave but do not remove them, so spots on glass usually remain. Ion-exchange softeners remove hardness minerals. Compare them in salt-free conditioner vs. ion-exchange softener.
Everyday fixes
- Squeegee shower glass after each use.
- Use a rinse aid in the dishwasher.
- Soak aerators and shower heads in vinegar to remove scale.
- For drinking glasses, an under-sink RO removes most dissolved minerals at that tap.
