What each one does
| Softener | Filter (carbon-based) | |
|---|---|---|
| Removes | Calcium and magnesium (hardness) | Chlorine, chloramine, taste and odor compounds |
| Solves | Scale, spots, appliance buildup | Pool smell, chemical taste |
| Does not solve | Chloramine taste | Hardness scale |
How Hollywood water tips the decision
The City of Hollywood's 2025 Water Quality Report describes lime softening and membrane filtration for Biscayne Aquifer water and reverse osmosis for brackish Floridan Aquifer water. Both processes reduce minerals. Then the city adds chloramines, averaging 2.42 parts per million in 2025. That combination is why a chloramine filter is the more common first step here.
The city's report does not publish one hardness figure for every address, and Hollywood blends water from two very different aquifers, so the only way to know your hardness is to measure it at your tap.
When you might need both
- A tap test shows meaningful hardness along with chloramine.
- You are on a private well, where hardness, iron and odor often show up together.
- A business needs scale protection on equipment and better-tasting water for customers.
A quick self-check
- You notice a pool smell in the shower or a taste in coffee: that points to chloramine, so a filter.
- You see crusty buildup inside shower heads and kettles: that points to hardness, so test for a softener.
- You see orange stains outside: that is iron from an irrigation well, a different fix entirely. See rust stains.
- You notice nothing: you may not need either. An RO tap for drinking water may be the only upgrade you want.
Businesses are a different case
For Hollywood restaurants, hotels and laundries, equipment protection is the priority. Even moderate hardness adds up when water is heated all day. Many businesses use a softener to protect heaters, dishwashers and ice machines, plus carbon filtration where taste matters to customers. Living Water installs ion-exchange softening plants for these settings, sized from a site test.
When you might need neither
If your test shows low hardness and you do not notice the chloramine, you may be fine as you are, or happy with just an under-sink RO system for drinking water. Jorge will say so.
