Why spots appear on soft water
- Evaporation: every drop leaves dissolved solids behind.
- Water heater sediment reaching aerators and shower heads.
- Salt spray on balcony glass and outdoor fixtures, which is not your tap water.
- Soap residue that looks like scale.
A simple test: spots that wipe off with a damp cloth are mostly residue. Crusty buildup that needs an acid cleaner points to minerals and is worth measuring.
What the utilities do
Jupiter says nanofiltration replaced its older lime softening plant, and it treats brackish deep water with reverse osmosis. Seacoast's Hood Road plant uses nanofiltration for demineralization of fresh aquifer water and RO for brackish water. Membrane-softened water leaves less scale than raw groundwater.
If you moved here from an area with untreated hard groundwater, expect noticeably less scale in kettles and shower heads.
Lower hardness also means less buildup inside water heaters and on dishwasher parts, though not none.
Softener, conditioner or neither
A softener removes hardness ions; a salt-free conditioner changes how minerals behave. If your tap reading is already low, neither may help much. Compare salt-free conditioner vs. ion-exchange softener.
Salt-free conditioners do not remove minerals, so spots from evaporation still appear. Softeners remove hardness but not the sodium and other dissolved solids that remain in any water.
If you are on a well
Well water bypasses utility treatment and can be hard. If you irrigate from a well, spots on windows and cars near sprinklers can come from that water. See wells in Juno Beach.
Adjust sprinkler heads so they do not spray windows, walls or cars; that alone stops most outdoor spotting.
Practical fixes
- Squeegee glass doors after showers.
- Clean aerators and shower heads periodically.
- Flush the water heater on the maker's schedule.
- Rinse outdoor glass with fresh water after windy days.
For stubborn marks, use a cleaner made for shower glass, test a small area first and avoid natural stone surfaces.
Measure before you buy
Jorge tests hardness and total dissolved solids at your tap and tells you whether equipment would help. Call, text or WhatsApp (305) 793-5974. See water softeners in Juno Beach.
Many people find that a squeegee and a heater flush solve what they thought was a water problem.
Bring photos of the spots you see; they help tell residue from scale.
