Why most homes skip it
Membrane treatment removes much of the hardness before water leaves the plant. Jupiter's water utility page describes nanofiltration as removing undesirable dissolved constituents, and Seacoast describes nanofiltration as demineralization of its fresh surficial aquifer supply. Paying to soften water that has already been membrane-softened rarely changes much at the tap.
If someone recommends softening a Juno Beach home on utility water, ask to see the hardness reading from your tap and the target after softening. Without those, there is nothing to price.
When there is a reason: price drivers
- Measured hardness at your tap or well.
- Daily water use and peak flow.
- Tank and resin size, valve type and regeneration control.
- Installation: plumbing, drain access, electrical.
- Commercial needs: equipment specs for kitchens, laundries, boilers.
For a business, the equipment maker's water specs usually set the target, and that target drives the size of the system.
Ongoing costs
Ion-exchange softeners use salt to regenerate and need periodic service. Ask about salt use per regeneration, service intervals and warranty. See water softener cost in Florida.
Salt-free conditioners have different upkeep, usually periodic media replacement. Ask which type is being quoted and why.
Private wells are different
A private well bypasses the utilities' membranes entirely. If a test shows hardness along with iron or sulfur, softening may be one part of a well system configured from that test. See well water in Juno Beach.
Iron and sulfur in well water also affect resin life, which is why a well test comes before any softener sizing.
Questions to ask before you pay
- What is my hardness reading, and what will it be after softening?
- What problem that I see today will this solve?
- Would a chloramine filter or kitchen RO address my real complaint?
Compare in softener vs. filter in Juno Beach.
If the answers are vague, the recommendation probably is too.
Start with a hardness test
Jorge tests hardness free at your home. Call, text or WhatsApp (305) 793-5974. Living Water offers financing through its financing partners; you apply with a credit application, and a co-applicant can apply with you.
He will tell you plainly if the reading does not justify equipment.
For businesses, he can also review the equipment maker's water requirements with you.
