Why Jupiter uses chloramine
The Town explains that chloramine is used most of the year because chlorine alone can create more disinfection byproducts, which are regulated. Chloramine lasts longer in the pipes. Jupiter's 2025 byproduct numbers are low: TTHM at 1.58 ppb and HAA5 at 4.82 ppb against limits of 80 and 60.
The free chlorine maintenance
Every year the Town converts to free chlorine to keep mains clean, saying this is practiced annually given the warm climate. The 2026 program ran July 14 through August 4. The Town notes many people notice a chlorine taste or smell, while others notice nothing. Fish owners must remove both chlorine and chloramine, and dialysis patients should check with their providers. Questions: [email protected] or 561-741-2300.
Why plain carbon may struggle
- Chemistry: the chlorine is bound to ammonia, so it reacts slowly with ordinary carbon.
- Contact time: it needs longer contact, which small, fast-flowing cartridges do not give.
- Capacity: at around 3 ppm, small filters can be used up faster than their label suggests.
What to look for
- Catalytic carbon or media designed for chloramine.
- A chloramine reduction claim on the exact model's NSF/ANSI 42 listing; chlorine-only claims do not cover chloramine.
- Sizing to your home's peak flow.
Living Water describes its Puronics Clarius iGen and Goodspring whole-home systems as removing chloramine and chlorine.
Whole-home or kitchen only
A whole-home system covers showers and laundry; an under-sink RO covers drinking and cooking. Read the chloramine filter guide for the details.
Juno Beach and county customers
Jupiter Utilities serves the Town of Juno Beach and unincorporated parts of Palm Beach and Martin Counties, and the Town says its free chlorine program includes all customers of the system. So the same chloramine, and the same summer switch, apply at those addresses. Homes in Tequesta or on Seacoast Utility Authority water are on different systems; check that utility's report for its disinfectant.
Aquarium and pond owners should keep using a water conditioner that handles chloramine and chlorine year-round, since the Town notes both are toxic to fish.
