What changed in 2025
WASD's 2025 Water Quality Report says its Alexander Orr, Jr., John E. Preston and Hialeah plants discontinued fluoride on June 6, 2025, to comply with County Resolution R-370-25 and Florida Senate Bill 700, effective July 1, 2025. WASD says the change does not significantly affect treatment or compliance. Natural fluoride from the Biscayne Aquifer remains.
Reading the report table
The 2025 table still shows fluoride results for the whole year, which includes months before June when fluoride was added. For current levels, use WASD's note on the 0.1 to 0.3 ppm range after discontinuation, or test.
If you still want to filter
- Reverse osmosis is a common method for reducing fluoride at a kitchen tap.
- Ordinary carbon filters are not designed for fluoride.
- Certification: look for fluoride reduction on the exact model's NSF/ANSI 58 listing.
See under-sink RO on Key Biscayne.
Whole-home filters are generally not used for fluoride; treatment at the kitchen tap is the usual approach because that is where drinking and cooking water comes from.
No health claims here
We do not make health claims for or against fluoride. Questions about fluoride and your family's dental care belong with your dentist or doctor.
Fluoride and RO in a condo kitchen
If reducing fluoride is your goal, the practical location in an island condo is the kitchen sink, since that is where drinking and cooking water comes from. Things to plan:
- Certification: confirm the specific RO model lists fluoride reduction, and at what capacity.
- Remineralization: RO lowers minerals overall; an alkaline stage adds some back for taste.
- Ice and fridge water: route RO water to the refrigerator if you want the same water there.
- Filter schedule: certified performance assumes on-time changes.
- Building rules: check your association's rules on plumbing work in units.
Because WASD no longer adds fluoride, many households now find the question moot and choose RO for taste and chloramine instead. Either way, the system is the same; what you are looking for on the certification listing is what differs. See reverse osmosis cost on Key Biscayne.
What WASD did before
WASD notes that it had added fluoride to drinking water since 1958 on the advice of public health professionals, until the 2025 change. If you look back at older reports, you will see fluoride listed as an additive. Reports from 2026 onward reflect only natural levels.
