What PFAS are
Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances have been used in non-stick, stain-resistant and water-resistant products and some firefighting foams. They break down very slowly. Pompano Beach's PFAS page explains that in April 2024 EPA set national drinking water limits for PFOA, PFOS and several other PFAS.
North section: Pompano Beach
Pompano Beach's 2025 Water Quality Report includes a Voluntary Monitoring table for PFOA, PFOS, PFHxS, PFNA and the Hazard Index, sampled four times in 2025. The city's PFAS page says its water meets all current state and federal requirements, and lists what it is doing: researching removal technology, taking part in a lawsuit against manufacturers, and planning expansion of its newer membrane plant for PFAS removal to replace the aging lime softening plant. Questions go to the laboratory at 954-545-7018.
South section: Fort Lauderdale
Fort Lauderdale's 2025 Water Quality Report does not include a PFAS table. EPA's UCMR 5 Data Finder lists PFAS monitoring results by water system, and Fort Lauderdale's Customer Service Center is 954-828-8000.
Choosing a PFAS filter
- Look for NSF/ANSI 53 (filters) or NSF/ANSI 58 (reverse osmosis) certification that lists PFOA and PFOS reduction.
- Match the exact model number on the certifier's listing.
- Change cartridges on schedule; claims apply only within rated capacity.
Living Water does not claim its systems remove PFAS. Check the certification of any model, including anything Jorge shows you.
Testing
PFAS testing requires a certified lab using EPA methods. Jorge's free screening covers chloramine, hardness, TDS, pH and iron, not PFAS. See home screening vs. lab analysis.
Reading PFAS results
PFAS results are reported in nanograms per liter (parts per trillion), compound by compound. Pompano Beach's table lists the average and range for each compound across its 2025 samples, alongside EPA's limits. If a number is unclear, ask the city lab or ask Jorge to walk through it with you.
