What the in-home test covers
- Total and free chlorine, to see the chloramine residual at your tap.
- Hardness, to confirm whether softening is needed.
- TDS (total dissolved solids).
- pH.
- Iron, when stains or a well are involved.
It is a screening. For bacteria, lead, PFAS or other specific contaminants, a certified lab is the right tool. See home screening vs. lab analysis.
Which report is yours
Look at your water bill. If it comes from the City of Fort Lauderdale, read Fort Lauderdale's 2025 Water Quality Report; it lists chloramines averaging 2.3 ppm. If it comes from the City of Pompano Beach, read Pompano's 2025 report, which is addressed to Pompano Beach, Lighthouse Point and Lauderdale-by-the-Sea customers and lists a highest running annual average of 3.36 ppm. Pompano's laboratory answers questions at 954-545-7018; Fort Lauderdale's Customer Service Center is 954-828-8000.
Why the tap can differ from the report
A utility reports averages from samples across its system. Your tap reflects your distance from the plant, how long water sits in your building's pipes, your plumbing and your water heater. In a high-rise, water may sit in risers and storage longer than in a house. That is why a reading at your own faucet is worth having.
What happens during the visit
Jorge runs the tests at your kitchen tap, shows you each number, and compares it with your utility's report. If everything looks fine for your goals, he tells you. Read what happens during a home water assessment.
Tips for testing in a building
- Do not run the tap long before Jorge arrives; he will flush and sample on site so you see both readings.
- If you have been away, mention it, since water that sat in pipes can read differently.
- Have a recent water bill handy so the right utility report is used: Fort Lauderdale or Pompano Beach.
After the test
You keep the readings. If you want lab work for something the screening does not cover, Jorge explains what to ask a certified lab for. If you decide on a system, the quote is based on the numbers you just saw, not on a standard package.
