What it does and does not do
Does: reduces the chloramine taste and smell at every faucet and shower, and improves the water feeding your laundry and appliances.
Does not: soften water (the county already treats it with lime for hardness), or replace a certified drinking water system for specific contaminants. For drinking water, add under-sink RO.
Why chloramine changes the design
Broward County's report explains that a small chloramine residual is kept throughout the distribution system to control microbial regrowth. Chloramine, chlorine bound to ammonia, reacts slowly with standard carbon. A whole-home system for this water needs:
- Catalytic carbon or chloramine-rated media.
- Enough media volume so water has contact time when several fixtures run.
- A chloramine reduction claim on the exact model's NSF/ANSI 42 listing; a chlorine claim alone does not cover it.
Living Water installs Puronics Clarius iGen and Goodspring whole-home systems, which Living Water describes as removing chloramine and chlorine. See the city water system page.
The free chlorine weeks
District 1 periodically switches to free chlorine for routine maintenance; in 2026 that period was extended through September 28. A system designed for chloramine handles free chlorine as well, so there is nothing to change on your end. You may simply notice the difference less at the filtered taps than at an outdoor hose bib.
Fitting it to a Lauderdale Lakes house
- Where the main enters: many homes here are single-story slab houses with the meter at the front; the system goes near the entry point, often on an exterior wall or in the garage.
- Sun and weather: outdoor installs need protection.
- Irrigation: splitting the sprinkler line off before the filter saves media.
- Bathrooms and peak use: they set the size.
In condos and apartment buildings, the main is shared, so under-sink RO is usually the right fit instead.
Upkeep
Whole-home media is replaced on a schedule based on water use and chloramine level. Ask for that schedule in writing. See the annual cost of owning a whole-home filter.
