Where the minerals come from
The Biscayne Aquifer is largely limestone, so the raw groundwater the City pumps from its six wells is naturally rich in calcium. Lime softening at the plant precipitates much of that calcium out before the water is filtered and disinfected. The water that arrives at your house still carries some dissolved minerals; how much is what a tap test measures. The report lists sodium at 20.4 ppm, one of those minerals, but does not list hardness.
Spots vs. scale
- Spots on glass and dark counters: any dissolved minerals left behind when droplets dry. Even softened water can spot.
- Crust on aerators and shower heads: mostly calcium scale, a hardness sign.
- Scale in a tankless heater or kettle: heat speeds up scale, so these show it first.
Fixes in order of cost
- Squeegee shower glass after use and dry fixtures. Free, and it works.
- Clean aerators and shower heads with a mild acid such as vinegar.
- Drinking water RO for spot-free glasses and coffee equipment at the kitchen.
- Softener or conditioner if your test shows hardness worth treating.
Softener vs. conditioner
An ion-exchange softener removes hardness minerals. A salt-free conditioner changes how scale forms but leaves the minerals in, so it does less for spotting. For businesses in Lauderhill with dishwashers, ice machines or boilers, a properly sized softening plant is the standard answer. Compare on salt-free vs. ion-exchange and see water softeners in Lauderhill.
Wells and irrigation
A private or irrigation well bypasses the City plant entirely. If spots appear where sprinklers hit windows or cars, the irrigation water may be the cause, often with iron. See orange stains and well water in Lauderhill.
What a test result tells you
Hardness is usually reported in grains per gallon or in ppm as calcium carbonate. If your reading is low and you still see spots, the cause is likely other dissolved minerals or simply water drying on glass, and a softener will not change much. If the reading is high, especially on a well, a softener is worth pricing. Jorge also checks TDS, which tells you how much total mineral content is in the water, useful for deciding whether drinking water RO would give you spot-free glasses and coffee equipment.
