What lime softening at the plant means
The Biscayne Aquifer is mostly limestone and sand, and groundwater that sits in it picks up calcium. Lauderhill's 2025 Water Quality Report says the water is lime softened, filtered and disinfected before it enters the distribution system, and the City's water page also lists membrane filtration. Lime softening removes much of that hardness at the plant. The report does not publish a hardness number, so the only way to know what arrives at your faucet is to measure it.
Signs you might still want a softener
- White crust on shower heads and faucet aerators that returns quickly after cleaning.
- Spots on glass that do not wipe off with plain water.
- Scale in a tankless water heater or coffee equipment.
- A private well on the property.
Spots can also come from dissolved minerals other than hardness, so a test separates the two. See hard water spots in Lauderhill.
Businesses along the commercial corridors
Restaurants, salons, laundromats, car washes, gyms and offices along Oakland Park Boulevard, University Drive and State Road 7 often run equipment that heats water or evaporates it: dishwashers, boilers, steamers, ice machines, washers. Even moderately hard water concentrates scale in that equipment. Living Water installs ion-exchange softening plants for homes and businesses, sized from a test and the actual daily water use.
How ion-exchange softening works
Water passes through resin that trades calcium and magnesium for sodium. The resin is recharged with brine on a schedule. A softener adds a small amount of sodium; Lauderhill's report lists sodium at 20.4 ppm before any softening. If you watch sodium, ask about drinking water from an under-sink RO system.
Salt-free conditioners are a different technology. See salt-free conditioner vs. ion-exchange softener.
Before you sign for a softener
Ask the person selling it to show you a hardness reading from your own tap, not a general claim about Florida water. Ask how much salt and water the regeneration uses, where the brine drains, and what the resin and valve warranties cover. In a city that already softens its water, a softener should be justified by a number, not by a spot on a glass.
Softener or filter?
A softener handles hardness. A filter handles disinfectant taste, odor and color. In Lauderhill, filtration is the more common first need. Read softener vs. filter in Lauderhill.
