Two different jobs
| Water softener | Water filter | |
|---|---|---|
| Targets | Calcium and magnesium (hardness) | Disinfectant, taste, odor, organic color |
| You notice | Less scale and spotting | Better smell and taste, clearer-looking water |
| Upkeep | Salt and regeneration | Media or cartridge replacement |
| Typical Lauderhill fit | Wells, some businesses, homes that test hard | Most homes on City water |
Why the plant changes the answer
In some South Florida cities, water arrives hard and softeners are common. Lauderhill is different because its plant on NW 49th Avenue lime softens and filters the water before disinfection. The report does not publish a hardness figure, so a test at your tap is how you confirm it. If your reading is low, a softener would be solving a problem the City already handles.
Complaints and what they point to
- Pool smell in the shower, chemical taste: filter.
- Faint yellow tint in a white tub: filter; the 2025 report notes a secondary, aesthetic color reading from natural organics.
- Heavy white crust that returns fast: test hardness; a softener may help.
- Spots on glass: could be either; see hard water spots in Lauderhill.
- Private well: often both, configured from the well's test.
When both make sense
Businesses with heated-water equipment, homes on wells, and homes where your test shows real hardness can benefit from a softener plus a filter. In that case the order matters: filtration and softening are typically arranged so each protects the other, and the drinking water tap can get under-sink RO on top.
Salt-free conditioners
A salt-free conditioner is a third option that changes how scale forms rather than removing hardness. It is not a softener and not a filter. See salt-free vs. ion-exchange and softener vs. filter: which do you need.
A note for renters and condo owners
Softeners and whole-home filters both install on the main line, which most Lauderhill condos and rentals do not let you touch. If that is your situation, an under-sink RO system at the kitchen and a simple shower routine are usually the practical path. Ask your association or landlord before any work on shared plumbing.
