What sets the size, and the price
- Hardness level: harder water needs more resin capacity, or more frequent regeneration.
- Household use: number of people, bathrooms and peak flow.
- Iron: small amounts can be handled; higher iron needs a dedicated stage upstream.
- Valve type: demand-based (metered) regeneration uses salt and water more efficiently than a simple timer.
The well factor
The Town's 2024 planning analysis says most homes in Loxahatchee Groves rely on self-supply wells. Well water often brings iron and hydrogen sulfide along with hardness. Those can foul softener resin, so a well quote may include an iron and sulfur stage first. Ask the quote to show which numbers from your test justify each piece. More on this in well water treatment.
Installation on a rural property
Placement matters: near the pressure tank, inside a garage, or in a shed. Distance, a drain for regeneration water, an outlet, and a bypass for irrigation lines all affect labor. Many homes here are on septic, which the Town's comprehensive plan acknowledges; discuss where regeneration water will go.
Costs after installation
- Salt, in an amount that depends on hardness and use.
- Periodic resin cleaning on iron-bearing water.
- Service visits and retesting.
Ask for an estimate of how often the unit should regenerate given your test. That number drives salt use. See water softener cost in Florida.
Reading the quote line by line
A useful softener quote names the valve and tank size, the resin volume, the regeneration setting it will start with and why, the brine tank, bypass valve, drain connection, labor, and first-year service. On a well, it also states whether an iron or sulfur stage is part of the project or quoted separately. If two quotes differ a lot, compare those lines first. See how to compare water treatment quotes.
Commercial and agricultural properties
Living Water also installs ion-exchange softening plants for businesses such as restaurants, offices, gyms, laundries and car washes. On a nursery, stable or other working property, the cost depends heavily on which lines actually need soft water. Softening only the house, or only a wash area, can be far more sensible than softening every irrigation and barn line. Jorge maps the plumbing during the visit so the quote covers what you need and nothing more.
Softener, conditioner or neither
Some homes do not need a softener at all, especially on treated PBCWUD county water. Others can manage scale with a conditioner. Compare in softener vs. filter and salt-free conditioner vs. ion exchange.
