What you are starting with
Miami Beach tap water is bought by the city from the Miami-Dade Water and Sewer Department (WASD), treated mainly at the Hialeah and Preston plants, disinfected with chloramine, and sampled by both WASD and the city. It meets standards. People add drinking-water systems for taste, convenience and specific concerns that require certified equipment.
Options compared
| Option | Good for | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|
| Pitcher | Renters, small households | Small batches; frequent cartridge changes; chloramine performance varies |
| Fridge filter | Ice and door water | Small cartridge, short contact time |
| Delivery jugs or cases | No installation | Ongoing purchases, storage, carrying to upper floors |
| Under-sink alkaline RO | Condos and houses wanting filtered water on tap | Cabinet space, drain line, filter schedule |
| Whole-home filter | Houses wanting chloramine reduced everywhere | Not a drinking-water membrane; usually paired with RO |
Why RO fits island living
Condo and apartment kitchens on Miami Beach are often compact. Living Water's compact alkaline RO combines pre-filters, carbon, a membrane and an alkaline stage with its own faucet, and it can feed a refrigerator line. It also ends the trips carrying cases of water up from the garage. For specific contaminants, check that the exact model is certified under NSF/ANSI 58.
Specific concerns
- Fluoride: no longer added since summer 2025; natural levels about 0.1 to 0.3 ppm. See fluoride filters.
- PFAS: the city's and WASD's reports include PFAS results; trust only NSF/ANSI 53 or 58 certified models for PFOA and PFOS. See PFAS filters.
- Building plumbing: older risers can affect taste at a single unit; a point-of-use system treats the water right where you drink it.
How to choose
- Occasional drinker, renting short-term: a certified pitcher.
- Want filtered water on tap for drinking, cooking and ice: under-sink RO.
- House owner who also dislikes the shower smell: RO plus whole-home filtration.
Compare whole-house vs. under-sink filters and run the bottled water vs. RO calculator.
Keep it working
Any system is only as good as its last filter change. Set reminders from the manufacturer's schedule, and if you are away for months, flush the RO faucet when you return. Call, text or WhatsApp Jorge at (305) 793-5974 for a free test and advice for your kitchen.
