How the change happened
- May 6, 2025: Miami-Dade County Resolution R-370-25 approved.
- May 15, 2025: Florida Senate Bill 700 approved by the Governor, effective July 1, 2025.
- June 6, 2025: WASD's Alexander Orr, Jr., John E. Preston and Hialeah plants discontinued adding fluoride, according to WASD's 2025 Water Quality Report.
Because the City of Miami Beach buys its water wholesale from WASD, mainly from the Hialeah and Preston plants, the change applies to Miami Beach water too. The city's report notes the same: fluoride is no longer added, but it is a naturally occurring mineral in the water.
Natural fluoride that remains
WASD reports main system fluoride of about 0.1 to 0.3 ppm since fluoridation stopped, from natural levels in the soil and the Biscayne Aquifer. If you are comparing filters, that is the starting level.
Options and their limits
| Method | Fluoride | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Reverse osmosis | Common method for reduction | Check certification for fluoride on the exact model |
| Activated alumina | Used for fluoride | Depends on contact time and pH |
| Carbon pitcher or fridge filter | Generally not designed for it | Good for taste, not fluoride |
| Whole-home carbon | Not designed for it | Targets chlorine and chloramine |
Living Water's alkaline RO is a multi-stage reverse osmosis unit; confirm the model's fluoride documentation before relying on it for that purpose.
Keeping an RO effective
Fluoride reduction in an RO system depends on a healthy membrane. Replace pre-filters on time so they protect the membrane, replace the membrane on the schedule the manufacturer gives for your water, and ask whether the system includes a way to check performance, such as a TDS reading. If you are away from your Miami Beach home for months, flush the RO faucet before drinking when you return, and check whether filters are due.
We stay neutral
Whether you want fluoride in your water is your decision. For dental questions, talk with your dentist. We explain what is in the water and what equipment does.
For condo kitchens
An under-sink RO fits most Miami Beach condo kitchens without touching building plumbing. Remember it serves one faucet, plus a fridge line if connected. See under-sink RO on Miami Beach and alkaline vs. standard RO. Call, text or WhatsApp Jorge at (305) 793-5974 for a free visit.
