Where you will see it
- Cloudy spots on glass shower doors and mirrors.
- White crust on faucet aerators, showerheads and the base of fixtures.
- Film on dishes and glasses from the dishwasher.
- Scale inside kettles, coffee makers and the water heater.
- A ring on toilet bowls that cleaners struggle with.
Why spots happen even with plant softening
NMB Water softens Biscayne Aquifer water with lime or nanofiltration and blends in Floridan Aquifer water treated by reverse osmosis. WASD's plants also soften. Softening reduces hardness; it does not remove every mineral. Any water that evaporates on glass leaves its dissolved solids behind, and South Florida bathrooms dry slowly. If you have an irrigation well, sprinkler water on windows and cars can spot worse than tap water, because that water has not been treated at all.
Measure before you buy
Neither utility's report gives a single hardness figure for your street. Jorge's free test measures hardness and total dissolved solids at your tap. That number decides between a cleaning routine, a conditioner or a softener.
Softener vs. conditioner
| Ion-exchange softener | Salt-free conditioner | |
|---|---|---|
| How it works | Removes calcium and magnesium, swapping them for sodium or potassium | Changes how minerals behave; does not remove them |
| Spots on glass | Greatly reduced | Minerals remain, so spots can still form when water dries |
| Upkeep | Salt and periodic service | Media replacement |
More in salt-free vs. ion-exchange.
Protecting appliances, not just glass
Spots on glass are cosmetic. Scale inside a tank water heater, dishwasher, ice maker or espresso machine is a maintenance issue, because mineral layers make heating less efficient and can shorten equipment life. In a busy household with a tank heater, even moderate hardness adds up over the years. That is often a better reason to consider softening than the shower door. For Miami Gardens businesses such as restaurants, salons and laundromats, protecting equipment is usually the main reason for a commercial softener. Jorge can look at your heater and fixtures during the visit and tell you whether what he sees matches the test numbers.
Cleaning tips while you decide
- Squeegee glass shower doors after each use.
- Soak aerators and showerheads in white vinegar to loosen scale.
- Use a rinse aid in the dishwasher.
- Flush your water heater on a regular schedule; NMB Water's report recommends flushing the heater and household plumbing at least twice a year.
