Do you need one? The first cost question
NMB Water treats shallow aquifer water with lime softening or nanofiltration and deep brackish water with reverse osmosis at its Norwood plant. WASD's Hialeah and Preston plants use lime and enhanced softening. That plant treatment is why the most cost-effective answer for some Miami Gardens homes is no softener. Wells and businesses are a different story.
What sizes a softener
- Hardness measured at your tap, along with iron, which uses up softening capacity.
- People in the home and daily water use.
- Peak flow: bathrooms and fixtures that may run at once.
An undersized unit regenerates constantly; an oversized one costs more up front than needed.
Installation factors
| Factor | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Main line access | Where the line enters and room for a bypass. |
| Drain for regeneration | The softener needs a place to discharge brine rinse water. |
| Electrical outlet | Most control valves need power. |
| Outdoor placement | Equipment outside may need protection from sun and weather. |
| Combined system | Pairing with chloramine filtration affects layout. |
Running costs to ask about
- Salt type (sodium or potassium) and typical use.
- Water and drain use during regeneration.
- Resin life and service intervals.
- Warranty on the tank, resin and valve.
The Florida softener cost guide covers these in more depth.
Signs a softener quote is oversized
Because Miami Gardens water is already treated for hardness at the plant, be cautious of a quote that proposes a large softener without a hardness number written on it. Ask: what hardness did you measure, at which tap, and how did you calculate the size? A good quote shows the measured hardness, the household size it assumed and the regeneration setting. If a company did not test, the size is a guess. Jorge writes his test results down so you can compare quotes on the same facts, and he will tell you when a filter alone is the better fit for your home.
Commercial softeners
For a Miami Gardens restaurant, laundry, salon or gym, the drivers are daily water volume, the equipment being protected and how much downtime regeneration can cause. A commercial system is sized from a site test and usage figures.
