PFAS in brief
Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances have been used in non-stick cookware, stain- and water-resistant fabrics, food packaging and some firefighting foams. They break down very slowly in the environment. EPA explains the federal drinking water standards on its PFAS pages.
Because they persist, they can show up at low levels in water supplies across the country, which is why EPA required nationwide monitoring.
Where to see results for Miami Lakes
- WASD's 2025 report: a separate table for contaminants with recently set standards, listing PFOA, PFOS, PFNA, PFHxS and a PFAS Hazard Index for the main system, next to the federal limits.
- EPA UCMR 5 data: nationwide monitoring results published by water system.
- WASD's lab: the report lists 786-552-4738 for questions about the Hialeah and Preston plants.
The compliance timeline
WASD's report explains that systems must complete initial monitoring within three years of the rule, report results in Consumer Confidence Reports beginning with 2027 reports, and meet the new limits within five years of the rule. It says its systems are taking measures to comply. That work happens at the utility; at home, the only decision is whether you want an additional, certified point-of-use filter.
Until then, the report's PFAS table is the most direct look at results for the main system that serves the town.
Choosing a certified filter
- NSF/ANSI 53 (filters) or NSF/ANSI 58 (RO) certification listing PFOA and PFOS reduction.
- The exact model number on the certifier's listing.
- Replacement on schedule; claims apply only within rated capacity.
Living Water does not claim its systems remove PFAS. Check any model's certification before buying, including anything Jorge shows you.
Certification databases from the certifying organizations let you search by brand and model number.
Testing and private wells
PFAS testing requires a certified lab using EPA methods; ask which compounds the method covers. Jorge's free screening covers chloramine, hardness, TDS, pH and iron, not PFAS. Private wells aren't covered by utility data at all. See home screening vs. lab analysis.
Help reading the report
Values are in parts per trillion, highest result first with the range in parentheses. If anything is unclear, ask WASD, or let Jorge walk you through it during a free visit. Call, text or WhatsApp (305) 793-5974.
There's no obligation to buy anything.
