Start with the test
WASD's 2025 report describes lime softening at the Hialeah plant and enhanced softening at Preston, but it doesn't publish a hardness figure per home. Measuring at your tap is the only way to know whether a softener is worth buying. Not buying one you don't need is the biggest saving.
If you're on a private well, hardness skips that plant softening entirely, so the result is often higher and the sizing changes.
What sets the price
| Factor | Effect |
|---|---|
| Measured hardness | More hardness, more capacity |
| Household or business use | More water, larger unit |
| Drain and space | Distance to a drain and room for the brine tank |
| Water source | Wells usually need more capacity and pre-treatment for iron |
| Salt | Ongoing, tied to hardness and use |
Commercial softening
With more than 1,700 businesses in town, a lot of softener questions in Miami Lakes come from restaurants, gyms, laundries and offices. Commercial plants are sized to flow rate, peak demand and the equipment they protect. The quote should explain how the size was chosen.
Ask whether the quote covers bypass valves so the business can keep running during service.
Questions to ask
- What hardness did you measure?
- How often will it regenerate, and how much salt will it use?
- Where will it drain?
- What's covered by the written warranty?
See water softener cost in Florida.
A quote that sizes the unit without measuring hardness or asking about water use deserves a second look.
What changes over the years
Ownership cost is mostly salt, the water used for regeneration, and periodic service. Resin lasts a long time if iron and chlorine are managed, which is why well water with iron may need pre-treatment. Ask for an estimate of each before you sign.
A unit that regenerates more often than needed wastes salt and water, so the settings matter as much as the size.
Alternatives worth comparing
Salt-free conditioners have no salt cost but don't remove hardness. If chloramine is what bothers you, the money belongs in filtration instead. Read conditioner vs. softener.
Jorge will tell you plainly which of these fits your test, including when the answer is to skip softening altogether.
