Softening already happens upstream
WASD's 2025 report says Hialeah plant water is treated much like the Orr plant's, which uses lime to reduce hardness, and that Preston water goes through enhanced softening because of its higher natural organic content. Neither step removes every mineral, and the report doesn't list a hardness number per neighborhood. Your tap test is the deciding number.
Signs it's worth testing for
- Crust that returns on faucets within weeks of cleaning.
- Spots on glassware even with rinse aid.
- A tankless heater that needs frequent descaling.
- Soap that doesn't lather well.
Any of these is a reason to measure, not a reason to buy. Plenty of homes with one or two of these signs turn out to have moderate hardness that habits handle.
Who in Miami Lakes tends to need one
- Homes on a private well, where no utility softening happens.
- Businesses with scale-sensitive equipment: restaurants, gyms, laundries, offices with coffee and ice machines. The town reports more than 1,700 businesses, many in its planned business parks.
- Homes whose test shows notable hardness and visible scale on fixtures and glass.
How an ion-exchange softener works
Resin beads trade hardness minerals for sodium. When the resin is full, the unit regenerates with salt brine and flushes it to a drain. Living Water installs ion-exchange softening plants sized to measured hardness and water use for homes and businesses.
Regeneration timing can be set by water use rather than the calendar, which saves salt in households that travel.
What a softener won't do
It won't remove chloramine, improve taste or treat irrigation stains. For chloramine, see whole-home filtration. For orange stains from lake or well sprinklers, see iron stains. The softener vs. filter page lays out the difference.
Conditioners and alternatives
Salt-free conditioners don't remove hardness; they change how it behaves. If you're weighing the two, read salt-free conditioner vs. ion-exchange softener.
Drain, salt and space
A softener needs a drain for regeneration, a spot for the brine tank, and someone to add salt. In a townhome garage or a business back room, space can decide the model. Jorge checks all three during the free visit and gives you an itemized quote. Call, text or WhatsApp (305) 793-5974.
If space is tight, he'll say so up front rather than squeezing in a unit that's hard to service.
