NORTH LAUDERDALE · FLUORIDE FILTER

Fluoride Water Filter in North Lauderdale

North Lauderdale's 2025 Water Quality Report lists fluoride at 0.39 to 0.76 ppm, sampled from January to June 2025. Florida's SB 700, effective July 1, 2025, prohibits additives to public water that are not for the explicit purpose of improving water quality, so ask the City about its practice since then. Fluoride also occurs naturally. To reduce it at home, reverse osmosis is the common method; check the exact model's NSF/ANSI 58 fluoride claim.

The report's numbers

The inorganic contaminants table shows fluoride at a highest level of 0.76 ppm, with a range of 0.39 to 0.76 ppm, against a maximum contaminant level of 4. The sampling dates, January to June 2025, all fall before the state law took effect. The table's standard source note describes fluoride as both naturally occurring and a water additive at an optimum level of 0.7 ppm.

The state law

The Florida Senate's summary of SB 700 (2025) says it prohibits the use of any additive to a public water supply that is not for the explicit purpose of improving water quality, effective July 1, 2025. Many utilities have said this ended fluoride addition. For North Lauderdale's current practice, call Public Works & Utilities at (954) 724-7070.

Natural fluoride

Groundwater from the Biscayne Aquifer carries some natural fluoride. Utilities continue to test and report it, so future reports will still show a number, likely lower than when fluoride was added.

Ways to reduce it at home

  • Reverse osmosis: the common method at a kitchen tap. Confirm fluoride is on the model's NSF/ANSI 58 listing.
  • Pitchers and fridge filters: generally not designed for fluoride.
  • Whole-home carbon: aimed at chloramine, not fluoride.

Living Water's under-sink alkaline RO adds minerals back after the membrane for taste. See alkaline vs. standard RO.

Remineralization and taste

RO removes most dissolved minerals along with fluoride, which some people find makes water taste flat. Living Water's system adds minerals back in its last stage and raises pH, which many people prefer for drinking and coffee. If you use RO water for a baby's formula or have specific dietary needs, ask your pediatrician or doctor what they recommend.

Neutral on fluoride

Some families want less fluoride; others prefer to keep it. We take no side and make no health claims. Ask your dentist or doctor about fluoride for your family. Our role is to explain what the City reports and what equipment can and cannot do.
