Options side by side
| Option | Strengths | Limits |
|---|---|---|
| Pitcher | No installation | Small filter, frequent changes, often chlorine-only claims |
| Fridge filter | Cold water and ice | Small cartridge; check its chloramine claim |
| Under-sink alkaline RO | Multi-stage, dedicated faucet, reduces dissolved solids | Cabinet space and a drain connection |
| Whole-home filter | Every tap and shower | Not designed to lower dissolved solids |
North Miami's water in brief
The city blends water from its Winson plant with water bought from Miami-Dade. Its 2025 report lists chloramine at 2.0 ppm, sodium at 19.2 ppm and fluoride at 0.17 ppm in the city system, plus a separate PFAS monitoring table. On lead, it found 1.8 ppb at the 90th percentile with no sampled homes above the action level, and it repeats the federal guidance that a filter certified by an ANSI-accredited certifier to reduce lead is effective in reducing lead exposure.
How to choose
- Taste only? A chloramine-rated filter or RO.
- Older home or lead concern? A model certified for lead reduction; check its listing. The city also invites residents to check their service line material.
- PFAS concern? A model certified for PFOA and PFOS. See PFAS filters.
- Bothered in the shower too? Add a whole-home system.
- Buying bottled water? Try the bottled water vs. RO calculator.
Why alkaline RO is a common pick
Living Water's alkaline RO is a multi-stage under-sink system with a dedicated faucet and a final stage that adds minerals back for taste. It suits houses, condos, apartments and offices. See alkaline vs. standard RO.
Cold water only, and flushing
The city's lead guidance also advises using only cold water for drinking, cooking and baby formula, and flushing pipes for several minutes after water has sat, for example by running the tap, showering or doing laundry. Those habits apply whatever system you choose.
Before you buy
- What does this exact model's certification list?
- How often do filters change?
- Where do the faucet and drain go?
- Can it feed the fridge?
