What the city does before the water reaches you
At the Winson plant, after aeration, lime and sodium hypochlorite are added to destroy bacteria and remove minerals such as iron, and lime softening lowers calcium and magnesium. The water is then filtered through anthracite coal. The roughly 40% of demand bought from Miami-Dade comes from county plants that also use lime-based softening. Softening lowers hardness but does not take it to zero.
Signs you may still want a softener
- White crust on showerheads and aerators returns quickly after cleaning.
- Spots on glass and dishes despite rinse aid.
- A tank water heater that rumbles or loses efficiency.
- Commercial dishwashers, ice machines or coffee equipment that need frequent descaling.
These can also have other causes, so a hardness reading decides. See hard water spots in North Miami.
Restaurants and businesses
North Miami's commercial corridors, such as NE 125 Street and Biscayne Boulevard, have many restaurants, cafes, salons and laundries. For them, scale is a maintenance cost. A commercial ion-exchange softener is sized from the hardness test and daily water use. The city also runs a restaurant program that exchanges sink pre-rinse spray valves for low-flow models at City Hall, which can be worth combining with any water equipment upgrade.
How ion exchange works
Resin beads trade calcium and magnesium for sodium or potassium. When full, the resin regenerates with salt brine and the hardness is flushed to the drain. Living Water offers ion-exchange softening plants for homes and for restaurants, laundries, gyms, schools, offices and car washes.
Softening is not chloramine removal
A softener does nothing for the chloramine the city adds. If you want both, a carbon stage is paired with the softener in a city water system. Read softener vs. filter in North Miami.
Questions to ask before buying
- What hardness did the test show at my tap, and how does that compare with what causes visible scale?
- How is the softener sized, and how often will it regenerate?
- Where does the brine discharge go?
- How much salt will it use in a typical month?
- Do I need a separate drinking tap? Many people pair a softener with under-sink RO.
