Why spots appear on soft water
- Evaporation: every drop leaves dissolved solids behind.
- Water heater sediment reaching aerators and shower heads.
- Soap residue that looks like scale.
- Sprinklers on well water spotting windows, cars and boats.
- Salt spray on waterfront glass.
Boat owners notice spotting most after washdowns in the sun; drying with a chamois or blower prevents most of it.
What Seacoast does
Seacoast's Hood Road plant treats about 26 million gallons per day of capacity with nanofiltration, which it describes as demineralization, and 3.5 with low-pressure RO. Membrane-softened water leaves far less scale than raw groundwater, so heavy crust in kettles and shower heads is less common here.
If you moved here from an area with untreated hard groundwater, expect noticeably less scale in kettles, shower heads and dishwashers.
A quick check
Spots that wipe off with a damp cloth are mostly residue. Crusty buildup that needs an acid cleaner points to minerals and is worth measuring. If spots and grit show up mostly on hot-water fixtures, the water heater is a likely source.
Lower hardness also means less buildup in water heaters and on dishwasher parts, though not none.
Softener, conditioner or neither
A softener removes hardness ions; a salt-free conditioner changes how minerals behave without removing them. If your tap reading is already low, neither may help much, and spots from evaporation will still appear. Compare salt-free conditioner vs. ion-exchange softener.
Softeners also leave behind sodium and other dissolved solids, so they never eliminate spotting entirely.
Test first, then decide.
A reading in hand makes the choice simple.
Practical fixes
- Squeegee glass doors after showers.
- Clean aerators and shower heads periodically.
- Flush the water heater on the maker's schedule.
- Adjust sprinkler heads away from windows, walls and boats.
- Use a cleaner made for shower glass, tested on a small area, and avoid natural stone.
For dishwashers, check the rinse aid and settings before blaming the water.
Measure before you buy

Bring photos of the spots; they help tell residue from scale. Many people find that a squeegee and a heater flush solve what they thought was a water problem.
