What we can and cannot say
Dry skin has many causes: hot water, long showers, soaps, air conditioning, sun and individual skin conditions. We make no medical claims. What we can do is measure your water and explain what equipment changes, so you can decide whether trying it is worthwhile.
Chloramine as a comfort factor
Oakland Park's report lists chloramines between 1.8 and 2.6 ppm in 2024, within standards; Broward County and Fort Lauderdale also use chloramines. In a hot shower the smell is more noticeable. A whole-home system designed for chloramine removes it at every shower and sink. A shower-head filter is a smaller step, but check that its listing covers chloramine, not only chlorine.
If you are a Broward County customer in North Andrews Gardens or Lakeside, the county's 2025 report lists chloramine results by district; check your district's column for the range in your area.
Hardness is less likely here
The city's water is lime-softened at a Fort Lauderdale plant, and Broward County softens with lime and ferric chloride. Soap residue from very hard water is less common on softened water. A tap test rules hardness in or out in a few minutes.
If a test does show meaningful hardness, the cause may be a private well or something in the home's plumbing, and the conversation changes accordingly.
Habits that matter as much as the water
- Shorter, cooler showers.
- Gentle, fragrance-free cleansers.
- Moisturizing right after drying off.
- A dermatologist for persistent itching, rash or eczema.
Notice when the dryness happens, too. If it is worse during weeks when the water smells strongly of chlorine, that may coincide with a utility's periodic free chlorine maintenance.
Water temperature matters more than many people expect. Very hot water strips natural oils faster, and in Oakland Park's heat, a slightly cooler shower is often more comfortable anyway.
Shower filter or whole-home system?
Small shower filters have little contact time, which chloramine needs, so results vary by model. A whole-home system treats every bathroom, which matters in a house with several. In a condo or rental, a certified shower filter is often the practical choice. Jorge can measure chloramine before and after any filter you already own.
What a test shows
Jorge measures chloramine, hardness, pH and TDS at your shower or nearest tap and explains them plainly. If the numbers do not point to the water, he will say so. Call, text or WhatsApp Jorge at (305) 793-5974.
