Disinfectant by provider
| Provider | Disinfectant | Reported level |
|---|---|---|
| City of Oakland Park | Chloramines | 2.6 ppm, range 1.8 to 2.6 (2024 report) |
| Broward County (North Andrews Gardens, Lakeside) | Chloramines | By district in the county's 2025 report |
| Fort Lauderdale (Twin Lakes South) | Chloramines | In Fort Lauderdale's report |
All are within the 4.0 ppm limit.
Why plain carbon may struggle
- Chloramine is chlorine bound to ammonia and reacts slowly with ordinary carbon.
- It needs more contact time, so small, fast cartridges let more through.
- A chlorine taste and odor claim does not automatically cover chloramine.

What to look for
- Catalytic carbon or media designed for chloramine.
- Chloramine reduction on the exact model's NSF/ANSI 42 listing.
- Sizing to your peak flow for enough contact time.
- A service schedule you will keep.
Living Water describes its Puronics Clarius iGen and Goodspring whole-home systems as removing chlorine and chloramine.
If you already own a filter and still smell disinfectant in the shower, the usual reasons are media not designed for chloramine, a unit too small for your peak flow, or media past its capacity. Because Oakland Park's reported range runs from 1.8 to 2.6 ppm, a filter that seemed fine in one season can fall behind in another.
Free chlorine periods
Utilities that use chloramines periodically switch to free chlorine for a few weeks to clean their distribution systems, and Fort Lauderdale does this as routine maintenance. During those weeks the water can smell more like a pool. A filter designed for chloramine also handles free chlorine. Aquarium owners should ask a pet store about dechlorination, and anyone on home dialysis should follow their care team's guidance.
Whole house or kitchen only
If the smell in the shower is what bothers you, a whole-home system treats every tap. If you only want better drinking water, an under-sink RO system with a chloramine-rated pre-filter may be enough. Some Oakland Park households start with RO and add whole-home filtration later.
One more point for Oakland Park: because three providers serve the city, neighbors on different sides of a boundary can have slightly different chloramine levels and maintenance schedules. A reading at your own tap is the reliable number for sizing a filter.
Measure it at your tap
