Why many homes skip it
About 29.5 of the Hood Road plant's 30.5 million gallons per day comes from membranes. Membranes remove most hardness, so the water leaving the plant is soft. A home softener on that water adds equipment, salt and regeneration water without much to soften. Jorge measures hardness at your tap and will tell you plainly if a softener is not worth it.
If you bought a home that already has a softener, ask whether it is still needed on Seacoast water before paying for service or new resin. Bypassing an unnecessary softener, after a test confirms low hardness, can save salt, water and upkeep.
When you do need one: price drivers
- Hardness and iron from the test, which set capacity and regeneration.
- Water use: household size or a business's daily volume.
- Valve type: metered regeneration based on actual use.
- Installation: drain, power, bypass and placement under community rules.
- Other stages on a well, such as iron and sulfur removal.
On a private well, an untreated iron or sulfur problem upstream can shorten resin life, so the full system order affects ownership costs too.
Ongoing costs
- Salt or potassium.
- Water used for regeneration.
- Service visits and resin life.
Ask how the unit will be programmed. More in water softener cost in Florida.
Regeneration settings are one of the biggest variables: a timer-based unit regenerates whether or not you used much water, while a metered valve follows actual use. Ask which you are getting and how it will be programmed for your test results.
Businesses
Restaurants, gyms, laundries and car washes size softening to daily volume and the equipment being protected. On Seacoast water, many will not need it; on a well, many will. Living Water installs ion-exchange softening plants for businesses, and the quote should list capacity, regeneration settings and expected salt use.
Questions to ask
- What hardness did you measure, and in what units?
- Why do I need softening on membrane-treated water?
- How much salt per month?
- Would a chloramine filter solve my actual complaint? See softener vs. filter.
A clear quote also says how often the resin should be cleaned and whether iron in a well would shorten its life.
