Membranes do the softening
Seacoast's 2025 report describes nanofiltration as a process for the demineralization of its fresh surficial aquifer water, and low-pressure reverse osmosis for desalinating brackish Floridan water. Of the plant's 30.5 million gallons per day, 29.5 come from those membranes, with 1.0 of pretreated surficial blend water. Membrane water is naturally soft. That is very different from cities whose plants rely on lime softening, and it is why the softener question is usually short here.
When a softener still fits
- Private wells: raw surficial aquifer water has not been through Seacoast's membranes. Softening is often one stage of a well system.
- Businesses: restaurants, gyms, laundries and car washes sometimes add softening to protect equipment, especially on well supplies. Living Water installs ion-exchange softening plants for businesses.
- Western service area: homes in Seacoast West-Consecutive receive water purchased from Palm Beach County, treated differently. Test before assuming.
Spots are not proof of hardness
Seacoast's 2025 report lists sodium at 35.5 ppm. Any dissolved minerals, sodium included, can leave faint marks when water dries on glass. Light spotting on Seacoast water is rarely a sign that you need a softener. See hard water spots in Palm Beach Gardens.
If your home came with a softener from a previous owner, it may be working on water that no longer needs it. Jorge can test before and after the unit to show whether it is doing anything useful on Seacoast water.
What a softener would add
An ion-exchange softener swaps calcium and magnesium for sodium or potassium and regenerates with brine, which needs a drain, power and salt. On water that is already soft, it adds cost and upkeep without much benefit. That is why Jorge will tell you if a softener is not worth it.
The usual Palm Beach Gardens complaint
The most common complaint on Seacoast water is the chlorine-like smell of chloramine, not scale. A softener does nothing for that. Compare in softener vs. filter in Palm Beach Gardens and salt-free conditioner vs. ion-exchange softener.
For businesses, sizing follows daily water use and the equipment being protected, not the number of bathrooms, and the water source matters more than the address.
