"My provider already uses RO. Why add one?"
It is a fair question for NSID customers. NSID treats with nanofiltration and reverse osmosis, then adds chlorine and ammonia so a disinfectant residual protects the water in the pipes; its 2024 report lists chloramines at 3.66 ppm. A home RO system's carbon stages remove that chloramine, and the membrane polishes taste at the kitchen. For Coconut Creek customers, whose Broward County water is lime-softened rather than membrane-treated, the drop in dissolved solids at the RO faucet is usually more noticeable.
Protect the membrane from chloramine
- The carbon pre-filter must be designed for chloramine; chloramine damages many membranes.
- Pre-filters are used up faster on chloraminated water, so stay on schedule.
- Ask for the exact model's NSF/ANSI 58 listing and performance data sheet.
On a private well
RO can work very well on well water, but only after iron, hardness and sediment are handled upstream; otherwise the membrane fouls quickly. A drinking well should also be tested for bacteria and nitrate at least yearly, as the Florida Department of Health recommends. Living Water configures well systems from the test.
Alkaline RO
Living Water's under-sink systems are multi-stage alkaline RO units with a dedicated faucet. The alkaline stage adds minerals back for taste; it is a preference, not a health claim. See alkaline vs. standard RO and the compact alkaline RO.
Installation in Parkland kitchens
Parkland kitchens often have large islands, stone counters, refrigerators with dispensers and sometimes a second prep sink or a bar. An RO unit can feed the main faucet and, with extra tubing, the fridge and ice maker. A stone counter needs a faucet hole drilled, and HOA rules rarely affect under-sink work but are worth checking in some communities.
Day-to-day ownership
RO is a quiet system: you fill from its faucet and change filters on schedule. In a busy Parkland household that uses RO for cooking, coffee and the fridge, filters are changed more often than in a household that only drinks from it, so size the system and the schedule to how you really use water. Keep the filter dates on a label inside the cabinet. If you travel for long periods, ask how to restart the system when you return, since water that sits in a tank for weeks is best flushed before drinking.
