System design
- Number of stages and whether there is an alkaline stage.
- Tank or tankless; see tankless vs. tank RO.
- Production rate, which matters for large households.
- Faucet style and finish to match the kitchen.
Large families sometimes choose a higher-production unit or a larger tank so the faucet keeps up at dinner time.
Installation details common in Parkland
| Situation | Effect |
|---|---|
| Stone counter or island sink | Drilling and routing take more time |
| Refrigerator and ice maker line | Extra tubing and fittings |
| Second sink or bar | A second line or a second unit |
| Tight cabinet with disposal | Tankless or compact unit |
Your water source
NSID water has already been through nanofiltration and RO; its 2024 report lists sodium at 16.4 ppm and chloramines at 3.66 ppm, so a home membrane has an easy job but the pre-filter works hard on chloramine. Coconut Creek's Broward County water is lime-softened, with more dissolved solids for the membrane to remove. On a private well, iron and hardness have to be handled before the RO, which adds equipment upstream. A tap test turns all this into a realistic replacement schedule.
Ownership costs to ask about
- How often each filter and the membrane are replaced at your usage.
- Whether parts are standard or proprietary.
- What a service visit includes.
- Warranty terms in writing.
See RO maintenance and operating costs and filter replacement cost.
Compared with bottled water
Large households often buy a lot of bottled water. Write down your monthly purchases and use the bottled water vs. RO calculator with your own numbers.
What should not be on the quote
For a home on NSID or Coconut Creek water, an under-sink RO quote should not need iron or hardness pre-treatment unless a test shows a reason; ask which result any extra item addresses. A quote without a replacement schedule is incomplete, because filters and the membrane are the main ongoing cost. On a private well, the reverse applies: a quote that puts RO on untreated well water with no upstream stages deserves questions, since the membrane may foul quickly. Jorge lists installation and upkeep side by side so you can compare fairly.
