Driver one: your source
| Source | Plant treatment | Softener need |
|---|---|---|
| Coconut Creek (Broward County 2A) | Lime and ferric chloride softening | Rare |
| NSID | Nanofiltration and reverse osmosis | Rare |
| Parkland Utilities, Inc. | See its report | Test decides |
| Private well | None | Common |
Parkland Utilities customers should read that utility's report for its treatment process before assuming either way.
Driver two: hardness and household
On a well, capacity follows the measured hardness, household size and number of bathrooms. Parkland homes with many bathrooms, guest suites and large laundry loads need more capacity than a typical house, which affects tank size and salt use.
Driver three: what else is in the water
Well water with iron or sediment can foul a softener's resin. If the test shows iron, an iron stage may be needed before the softener, or a softener configured to handle some iron. That pre-treatment is often a bigger cost factor than the softener itself, which is why the test comes before the quote.
For larger households, ask whether a bigger tank with less frequent regeneration or a smaller one regenerating more often fits better; the answer affects both salt use and how the softener behaves on busy days.
Driver four: equipment, installation and upkeep
- Resin capacity, control valve type and how it decides when to regenerate.
- Drain access, bypass valve, power and space for the brine tank.
- Ongoing salt, periodic service and eventual resin replacement.

Questions that keep the quote honest
- What hardness and iron were measured, and where?
- How was capacity calculated?
- How often will it regenerate, and how much salt will that use?
- What does the written warranty cover?
If you are on NSID water and someone recommends a softener, ask for the measured hardness first.
Salt, water and space
Every regeneration uses salt and sends water to the drain, so a softener set for hardness higher than your water actually has wastes both. Setting it from a measured number avoids that. Parkland homes usually have garage space for the softener and brine tank, but the drain location matters: backwash and regeneration water needs a suitable place to go, which can affect installation on large lots and on well properties. Ask how the installer plans to handle it.
