Hardness by water source
| Source | What happens before your tap | Softener likely? |
|---|---|---|
| Coconut Creek (Broward County 2A) | Lime and ferric chloride softening, filtration | Rarely |
| NSID | Nanofiltration and reverse osmosis | Rarely |
| Parkland Utilities, Inc. | See its annual report | Test decides |
| Private well | Nothing | Often |
None of these reports gives a hardness number for your street, so a tap test is the practical check.
Private wells on large lots
Raw Biscayne Aquifer groundwater can be hard and carry iron, and a private well delivers it untreated. A softener on a well is usually one part of a larger system that may also handle iron, sulfur and sediment, and the order of those stages matters. See well water treatment in Parkland and the well water system page.
Businesses and institutions
Restaurants, gyms, schools and clubhouses run water heaters, dishwashers and ice machines all day, and even modest hardness concentrates in that equipment. Living Water installs ion-exchange softening plants for homes and businesses when the test supports it, sized from hardness and daily water use.
For a school, clubhouse or gym, a twin-tank system keeps softened water available while one tank regenerates, which matters when hot water is in use from early morning to late evening.
A softener does not remove chloramine
If your complaint is a pool smell or taste, a softener will not fix it. That is a job for a whole-home filter rated for chloramine. If you are not sure which problem you have, see softener vs. filter.
Ion exchange vs. salt-free
An ion-exchange softener lowers hardness and needs salt, a drain and usually power. A salt-free conditioner changes how minerals behave but leaves them in the water, so spots usually remain. On a hard private well, ion exchange is the standard. Compare: salt-free conditioner vs. ion-exchange softener.
Signs you may be on a hard source
- White crust that returns within days on shower heads and faucet aerators.
- Soap and shampoo that lather poorly.
- Scale inside kettles and coffee makers despite regular cleaning.
- Orange or brown staining alongside the scale, which suggests a well with iron too.
On NSID or Coconut Creek water these signs are unusual; if you see them, the test may point to a plumbing issue or a well you did not know about. Bring any older water test results to the visit so Jorge can compare.
