County water vs. well water
WASD's 2025 report says Orr water receives lime treatment to reduce hardness. That lowers scale without eliminating it, and the report does not publish a hardness number. Well water skips that step. Homes that connect to county water through the Village's project may notice spotting drop, while outdoor surfaces still hit by an irrigation well keep spotting, sometimes with an orange tint from iron.
Dissolved solids other than hardness can also leave faint marks, so even softened water can spot a little on dark glass in direct sun. The realistic goal is fewer, lighter spots that wipe away easily.
Where Pinecrest homes see it
- Frameless glass showers and large windows.
- Faucet aerators and rain showerheads.
- Dishwasher glassware and coffee machines.
- Pool tile lines and screened enclosures hit by sprinklers.
- Tankless water heaters, which are sensitive to scale.
Outdoors, irrigation-well water does the most damage: sprinklers that reach windows, sliding doors or a screen enclosure leave layers of mineral and iron that harden in the sun. Redirecting heads costs far less than any equipment.
Softener vs. conditioner
| Ion-exchange softener | Salt-free conditioner | |
|---|---|---|
| Removes hardness | Yes | No |
| Spots as water dries | Reduced | Can still form |
| Handles iron | Within design limits | No |
| Salt and drain | Yes | No |
Living Water offers ion-exchange softening. See salt-free vs. ion exchange.
On a well, the softener is sized with the iron number in mind, and iron beyond its design limit is treated first. On county water, a softener is a comfort choice you can make after seeing your hardness reading.
Low-cost steps first
- Squeegee glass after each shower.
- Rinse aid in the dishwasher.
- Descale aerators and showerheads with vinegar.
- Flush or descale heaters per the manufacturer.
- Redirect sprinkler heads away from glass and screens.
If that is not enough, see softeners and softener vs. filter.
For kitchen glassware, water from an under-sink RO has very low dissolved solids, so a final rinse with it leaves almost nothing behind. It does not help the shower, but it fixes the most visible complaint without treating the whole house.

If you are on a well, he also checks iron, because orange-tinted spots point to a different fix than white ones.https://www.miamidade.gov/resources/water/documents/2025-water-quality-report.pdf
