On county water
Water reaching Pinecrest from WASD's Orr plant has been lime-softened, filtered and disinfected with chloramine, about 2.5 ppm on the main system in 2025. Most drinking water complaints are about that taste. An RO's prefilters reduce it and protect the membrane, and the membrane lowers total dissolved solids, which is what makes RO water taste so different from the tap.
It is also the simplest way to stop buying bottled water without touching the rest of the house. The dedicated faucet sits next to your kitchen faucet, and an optional line can feed the refrigerator's water and ice so everything tastes the same.
On a private well
The Village asks well owners to test regularly for total coliform bacteria, nitrates, total dissolved solids and pH, and notes that the area has historically had incidents of arsenic, solvents, nitrate and the pesticide dieldrin. RO systems can be certified to reduce some of those contaminants, but only if the exact model's NSF/ANSI 58 listing names them, and RO is not a bacteria treatment. So on a well: lab test first, treat iron and hardness to protect the membrane, decide on bacteria separately, then RO. See well water in Pinecrest and UV vs. RO for well water.
How the stages work
- Sediment prefilter.
- Carbon suited to chloramine.
- RO membrane.
- Storage and polishing post-filter.
- Alkaline stage that adds minerals back and raises pH for taste.
Install details
- Cabinet space for the unit and tank.
- A faucet hole; stone counters may need drilling.
- A drain connection for reject water.
- An optional line to the fridge or ice maker.
- Second units for a bar or guest house only if you really drink there.
In larger Pinecrest kitchens the best location is the sink where you actually fill glasses and pots. If the fridge is on the opposite side of an island, ask how the line will be routed before you decide.
Certifications
RO systems are certified under NSF/ANSI 58. Each contaminant claim, whether arsenic, nitrate, PFAS or fluoride, must appear on the exact model's listing. Living Water does not claim its systems remove PFAS. See PFAS and fluoride in Pinecrest.
