What PFAS are
PFAS (per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances) have been used in non-stick, stain-resistant and water-resistant products and some firefighting foams, and they persist in the environment. EPA's PFAS pages explain the national drinking water limits and timelines.
County water
WASD's 2025 report includes PFAS results for the main system, which the Orr plant feeds south of SW 8 Street. It lists PFOS, PFOA, PFNA, PFHxS and a Hazard Index for a PFAS mixture, says initial compliance monitoring is underway, and says compliance results will appear in reports beginning in 2027. Read the table on miamidade.gov, noting system and year; WASD's water quality line is 786-552-4181. EPA posts nationwide UCMR 5 data by water system too.
PFAS results are reported in parts per trillion, a very small unit. Look at the main-system column, the range, and the federal limit next to it, and remember that compliance under the new rule is calculated over time. If something is unclear, ask WASD directly.
Private wells
The Village's list of recommended well tests covers coliform bacteria, nitrates, TDS and pH, and it notes that the area has historically had incidents of arsenic, solvents, nitrate and dieldrin. PFAS is not on that routine list. If you want to know about PFAS in your well, ask a certified lab for a PFAS analysis using EPA methods. See well water in Pinecrest.
Choosing a PFAS filter
- NSF/ANSI 53 (filters) or NSF/ANSI 58 (RO) certification naming PFOA and PFOS reduction.
- The exact model number on the certifier's listing.
- Cartridges replaced on schedule.
Living Water does not claim its systems remove PFAS. Jorge will tell you to check any model's certification before buying, including anything he shows you.
Many whole-home systems are designed for chlorine and chloramine, not PFAS; if PFAS is your concern, the certification listing is the only thing that answers it.
Testing
Jorge's free screening covers chlorine and chloramine, hardness, TDS, pH and iron, not PFAS. He can help you read WASD's table or a lab report. See home screening vs. lab analysis.
If you get a well lab report, bring it; he can explain units, reporting limits and how results compare with EPA's standards.Talk it through
