Connected homes: maybe nothing
WASD's 2025 report says Orr water receives lime treatment to reduce hardness. If your tap test shows little remaining hardness, the cheapest softener is the one you do not buy. And if you connected recently, you may already own a well-era softener that is now doing little; Jorge can test before and after it. See hard water spots in Pinecrest for low-cost steps.
The most common overspend is buying a softener for what is really a chloramine complaint. A softener does nothing for a pool smell or chemical taste; a whole-home filter does.
Well homes: part of a system
On a private well, hardness often comes with iron and hydrogen sulfide. Iron can foul resin, so it is treated first or the softener is designed for it. Quotes vary with the well's numbers and its output. See well water in Pinecrest and well treatment cost in Florida.
Iron also changes running costs: a softener asked to handle more iron than it is designed for may need more frequent cleaning or resin replacement. That is why the well's iron number should be written on any well softener quote.
Price drivers
- Measured hardness and iron.
- Household size and fixtures, or a business's daily volume.
- Metered vs. timed regeneration.
- Installation: drain, power, bypass and placement on the property.
- Other stages in the system.
Running costs
- Salt or potassium chloride.
- Regeneration water.
- Resin life and service.
On a septic property, ask how regeneration discharge will be routed. Metered regeneration keeps salt and water use to what is needed. See water softener cost in Florida.
Questions to ask
- What hardness and iron did you measure, and in what units?
- Why this capacity for my home?
- Expected monthly salt use?
- Is my complaint really hardness, or chloramine?
A softener does nothing for the chlorine-type smell many newly connected homes notice. That is a filter's job.
If the person quoting cannot show you a measured hardness number from your tap or well, the quote is not built on your water.
