What PFAS are
PFAS (per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances) have been used in non-stick cookware, waterproof clothing, stain-resistant furniture, packaging and some firefighting foams. They break down very slowly in the environment. EPA's PFAS pages explain the federal drinking water rules and their timelines.
What PBCWUD reported
The county's 2025 report says that in 2025 it analyzed 29 PFAS compounds and lithium across four treatment plants, totaling 120 samples. Ten PFAS compounds were detected at low levels, and the other nineteen PFAS and lithium were not detected in the distribution system. The eastern table lists each detected compound, including PFOA and PFOS, with the average and range of results in micrograms per liter.
The western region's UCMR 5 testing reported no detections, but Royal Palm Beach is in the eastern region, so the eastern table is the one that applies.
How to read the table
- Results are in micrograms per liter (ug/L); 0.004 ug/L equals 4 parts per trillion.
- ND means not detected above the minimum reporting level.
- The level shown is an average or the highest result at a sampling point, depending on frequency.
- Compare values with EPA's current PFAS rules, which EPA explains on its drinking water pages.
For questions, call PBCWUD at 561-740-4600. EPA also publishes UCMR 5 data by system.
If you have questions about how the county plans to meet EPA's PFAS rules, ask PBCWUD directly. Living Water cannot speak for the utility; it can only help you read the published numbers and choose certified equipment if you decide you want it.
Choosing a PFAS filter
- Look for NSF/ANSI 53 (filters) or NSF/ANSI 58 (reverse osmosis) certification listing PFOA and PFOS reduction.
- Match the exact model number on the certifier's listing.
- Replace cartridges on schedule; claims apply only within rated capacity.
Living Water does not claim its systems remove PFAS. Jorge will tell you to check the certification of any model, including anything he shows you.
Testing and wells
PFAS testing needs a certified lab using EPA methods. Jorge's free screening covers chloramine, hardness, TDS, pH and iron, not PFAS. On a private well, no utility data applies, so a lab is the only way to know. See home screening vs. lab analysis.
