Because the county's treatment already reduces hardness, many households on county water find that a softener adds little. Regeneration settings are one of the biggest variables. A unit set to regenerate on a fixed timer can use salt and water whether or not you used much water that week. Metered valves regenerate based on actual use. Ask which one you are getting and how it will be programmed for your test results.
