What the county does about hardness
PBCWUD's 2025 report describes lime softening, which uses calcium hydroxide to remove impurities and adjust pH, along with nanofiltration and reverse osmosis membranes at its plants. Both reduce hardness minerals. The county does not publish a single hardness number for Royal Palm Beach in its report, which is why a test at your own tap is the reliable way to know.
Ion exchange at the plant is not a home softener
The county's report also mentions ion exchange, but describes it as using a resin to remove dissolved organic matter and color. That is a different job from a home water softener, which uses resin to swap calcium and magnesium for sodium or potassium. Same name, different purpose.
When a softener fits
- Private wells drawing raw groundwater, where softening is often one stage of a well system.
- Businesses such as restaurants, gyms, schools, laundries and car washes protecting water heaters, dishwashers, ice machines and washers. Living Water installs ion-exchange softening plants for these.
- Measured hardness at your tap that is causing real scale.
What a home softener needs
An ion-exchange softener needs a drain for regeneration, a power outlet, room for the brine tank, and a bypass for service. It adds a small amount of sodium or potassium to the water. Regeneration settings should match your measured hardness and water use, or it will use more salt and water than necessary.
Spots are not proof
White marks on glass can come from any minerals left when water dries. Royal Palm Beach's county water lists sodium between 18.2 and 49.7 ppm in 2023 sampling, which can leave light spots even when hardness is low. See hard water spots in Royal Palm Beach.
For businesses, the softener size follows daily water use and the equipment being protected, not the number of bathrooms.
Softener or filter?
If what bothers you is the chlorine-like smell, a softener will not help. That is chloramine, a filtration job. Compare in softener vs. filter in Royal Palm Beach and salt-free conditioner vs. ion-exchange softener.
