SOUTHWEST RANCHES · FLUORIDE FILTER

Fluoride Water Filter in Southwest Ranches

Most Southwest Ranches homes are on private wells, which never had fluoride added; any fluoride in a well is natural and can be measured by a lab. For homes on City of Sunrise water, Sunrise stopped adding fluoride on July 1, 2025, when a Florida law took effect prohibiting additives not meant to improve water quality. If you want to reduce fluoride, reverse osmosis is the common home method.

Private wells

A private well delivers groundwater as it is. Fluoride occurs naturally in groundwater at varying levels, so the only way to know your well's level is to test it, through a certified laboratory. If you have children and are on well water, your dentist may ask about it.

City of Sunrise water

Sunrise's 2025 reports list fluoride from April 2025 samples, before the change, at 0.70 ppm (Springtree), 0.74 ppm (Sawgrass) and 0.59 ppm (Southwest). The Florida Senate's summary of the 2025 law says it prohibits the use of any additive to a public water supply that is not for the explicit purpose of improving water quality, effective July 1, 2025. Natural fluoride remains and will continue to be reported.

Sunrise publishes a service area map so you can see which plant feeds your address, and its Utilities Department answers questions at (954) 888-6000.

Cooper City water

For properties connected to Cooper City Utilities, the city's 2025 report says it stopped adding fluoride after the law passed in May 2025, ahead of the July 1 effective date.

Reducing fluoride at home

  • Reverse osmosis: the most common home method, at a single kitchen tap. On a well, RO should follow iron, sulfur and hardness treatment. See under-sink RO.
  • Activated alumina: another media used for fluoride, sensitive to pH.
  • Carbon: generally not designed for fluoride.

Check the exact model's certification for fluoride reduction.

On a well, remember that RO membranes need protection from iron, sulfur and hardness to perform as listed.

Activated alumina works best within a certain pH range, which is one more reason to test before choosing.

Neutral on the debate

We take no position for or against fluoride. This page reports what the law and the utilities say and how treatment works. For questions about fluoride and your family's health, ask your dentist or doctor.

Wells, children and dentists

Because well water never had fluoride added, some families on wells discuss fluoride with their dentist, who may ask for a lab result. If you plan to reduce fluoride with RO, a lab test before and after shows the change at your tap.

Common questions

Is fluoride added to Southwest Ranches water?

Not to private wells. Sunrise and Cooper City stopped adding it in 2025 under state law.

Does my well have fluoride?

Possibly, naturally. A certified lab test tells you the level.

What were Sunrise's fluoride levels?

April 2025 samples showed 0.59 to 0.74 ppm across its three service areas, before additions stopped.

Does RO remove fluoride?

RO is a common method for reducing it. Check the exact model's certification.

Is the test free?

Jorge's in-home test is free. A lab fluoride test is charged by the lab.

Does boiling water remove fluoride?

No. Boiling does not remove fluoride.
