The options
| Option | On a well | On Sunrise water |
|---|---|---|
| Pitcher or fridge filter | Taste only; not built for iron, sulfur or hardness | Taste; check for a chloramine claim |
| Under-sink alkaline RO | Excellent final stage after pre-treatment | Strong choice on its own |
| Whole-home system | Usually essential: iron, sulfur, hardness | Optional, for chloramine everywhere |
On a well: build from the bottom up
- Lab test for bacteria and nitrate, as Florida DOH recommends yearly.
- Whole-house treatment for iron, sulfur and hardness, from Jorge's test.
- Under-sink RO for drinking and cooking.
- Retest on schedule.
RO is not a substitute for addressing bacteria in a well. See well water treatment and UV vs. RO for well water.
Keep the lab results and service records together; they are useful when you sell the property, since Florida does not require well sampling at sale and buyers often ask.
On Sunrise water
Sunrise softens and disinfects with chloramine. A kitchen RO handles drinking water taste and lowers dissolved solids; add a whole-home system if chloramine in the shower bothers you too.
Many homes on Sunrise water start with RO at the kitchen and add whole-home filtration later only if the shower smell still bothers them.
Questions to ask any system
- What is it certified for, under which NSF/ANSI standard?
- What pre-treatment does it need on my water?
- How often are filters changed, and can I do it?
- How much water goes to drain, and where does the drain go?
See bottled water vs. RO.
Ask, too, whether the installer stocks replacement parts and how quickly service is available in the Town.
Specific concerns
For PFAS or fluoride, see PFAS filters and fluoride filters. Buy only models certified for the contaminant and check the listing. An under-sink RO system covers many of these needs when certified.
On a well, a lab test for the contaminant you are worried about is the first step, so you buy a model certified for what is actually there.
